Sustainability

Raised with care for the water, the environment and the future of Australian seafood.

In harmony with nature

The farm is designed to work in concert with its surrounding wetland system, allowing natural cycles of water, tide, and season to shape how the fish are raised. Rather than forcing production, the environment is respected as an active partner—resulting in healthier fish, lower impact, and a product that reflects balance and purity.

A legacy of innovation

Our team operate at the forefront of best-practice aquaculture. For more than 30 years, continuous improvement has defined our approach to sustainable farming. From early investment in advanced hatchery and nursery systems to ongoing research and innovation, Opal Barramundi has consistently pushed Australian barramundi farming forward. This leadership is not theoretical—it is operational, measurable, and now independently verified. The farm’s practices set a benchmark for what responsible, high-performance aquaculture can achieve in Australia.

Certifications

Opal Australian Barramundi is the first barramundi farm in Australia to achieve Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification—the world’s most trusted benchmark for responsibly farmed seafood. This milestone followed a rigorous third-party audit covering environmental protection, fish welfare, worker wellbeing, and community engagement. Full traceability, transparent stakeholder engagement, and demonstrably low environmental impact are not aspirations here; they are requirements met in practice. ASC certification positions Opal Barramundi at the leading edge of global aquaculture standards.

2026 Sustainable Seafood Award

Opal Barramundi is grown by the Richards family at their ASC-certified farm in Australia’s Northern Territory. We are delighted to announce that this farm was recognised as ‘ASC Best Responsible Seafood Producer’ at the 2026 Sustainable Seafood Awards Australia.

Our circular saltwater environment

At the core of the farm sits an innovative, gravity-fed wetland water recirculation system. Designed to replicate mangrove and tidal ecosystems, this closed-loop network naturally treats and reuses water through grasses, wetlands, and biological processes.
Ninety-nine percent of nutrients remain on site, transformed into productive plant and algal growth rather than discharged into waterways. The result is an ultra-low impact operation that supports fish health, production efficiency, and ecosystem protection simultaneously.

Healthy fish

Healthy fish are the result of considered design, not intervention. Opal Barramundi are grown in saltwater ponds that closely mimic their natural habitat, with low stocking densities and high water quality maintained through natural systems. There is no routine use of antibiotics, no growth promoters, and no genetic manipulation. Daily health monitoring, low-stress handling, and gentle pump harvesting support calm, robust fish with superior texture and consistency. Animal welfare is treated as foundational, not optional.

Care for our community

Responsibility extends beyond environmental outcomes. Opal Barramundi invests in its people, regional communities, and the future of Australian aquaculture through meaningful partnerships and sponsorships. We were proud to support great initiatives like Plate for a Mate, the Institute of Culinary Excellence in Brisbane, the Australian Institute of Technical Chefs, as well as local amatuer fishing competitions.

Indigenous engagement

Operating on land of deep cultural significance carries an obligation to be good stewards. Opal Barramundi is committed to building long-term, respectful relationships with traditional owners, recognising their enduring connection to this place. Guided by our Indigenous Engagement Strategy, we strive to be an employer of choice for Aboriginal people, fostering a culturally safe and supportive working environment.
